Obituary for Michael Pohorylo

Michael “Mike” R. Pohorylo, 61, passed away at his home in Suffield, CT on July 22, 2013 after a long, courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A loved and admired husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and more, Mike brought joy to those around him with a kind heart, sharp sense of humor and a mischievous curiosity. Born in Springfield, MA and raised in Enfield, CT, he was son to Edward and Jessie Pohorylo, who predeceased him, and younger brother to beloved siblings Joan Ruggiero and husband Donald of Somers, CT and John Pohorylo and wife Nancy of Enfield, CT, who were both very active in his care. He also leaves a brother, Edward Pohorylo and wife Carolyn of Fort Meyers, FL. He met the love of his life – Diane Bellotti – while attending Enfield High School, and married her in 1972. He graduated from Central Connecticut State University, and studied for his MBA at the University of Hartford. Together, Mike and Diane embarked on many adventures – from Martha’s Vineyard to Maui, Hawaii to Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. – and raised a loving family. Mike was proud father to Megan Pohorylo Tucker and husband Brian of Falls Church, VA and Michael Pohorylo and wife Morgan of West Hartford, CT. He is affectionately known as “Papa” to Colin Tucker and Alexander Pohorylo. Nothing brought him more joy and pride than his children and grandchildren. Mike knew he wanted to be a salesman at age seven. After several sales positions and co-ownership of a small company, he started his own vending and food service business, Food Pro LLC, in 1995. He was an influential business leader and mentor in the community, serving as President of the Connecticut Vending Association. An avid bowler and ball player, Mike was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Dedicated to serving others, Mike sponsored many children at St. Jude’s Hospital over the years, served as a facilitator for a support group for individuals suffering from panic and anxiety, and made anonymous donations to needy individuals. There are countless friends and family who were loved by Mike, including seven nieces and nephews, five great-nieces and nephews, three godchildren, extended family from the Russell’s, Lee’s and David’s, sister-in-law Lynn Bellotti of Enfield, CT and father-in-law Nathan Bellotti of Suffield, CT. His exceptional medical team, led by Dr. Kevin Felice, and devoted caregiver Jennifer Vincent were indispensable partners during his battle with ALS. Family and friends are invited to gather at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, CT between 4-7 p.m. on Friday, July 26. Services will be held Saturday, July 27 at 9 a.m. at Leete-Stevens, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Adalbert’s Church, 90 Alden Avenue, Enfield, CT.
