Obituary for John E. Mayo

John E. Mayo, 89, of Enfield, beloved husband of 64 years to Joan (Abbott) Mayo, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at home. He was born on November 7, 1926, in Brewer, Maine, a son of the late Joseph and Amelia (Jones) Mayo. John has been a resident of Enfield for 58 years, he was a communicant of St. Bernard Church, and worked as a salesman for General Electric Supply for many years. After high school he proudly served his country in the U.S Army. John loved sports and enjoyed coaching with the American Legion baseball program in Enfield, and he was the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren's sports. He had a gift to gab and could talk to anyone he met. In addition to his loving wife Joan, he is survived by eight children, Kevin Mayo and his wife Kathy of Enfield, Joseph Mayo of Enfield, Carolyn Mayo of Newington, Patricia Callahan and her husband Jim of Virginia Beach, John Mayo, Jr. of Somers, Kathleen Birkenshaw and her husband Dave of Somers, Karen Conlon and her husband Bob of Somers, and Michael Mayo of Enfield; grandchildren, Tim Mayo and his wife Amber of Enfield, Jeff Mayo and his wife Delena of Taylorsville, NC, Kristin Allegro and her husband Tony of Enfield, Matt Mayo of Enfield, Jessica and Thomas Conlon of Somers, Lindsay Jones and her husband Randy of Richmond, VA, and Ryan Callahan of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Tess Allegro and Owen Mayo, a sister, Elaine Crane, two sisters-in-law, Helen Abbott and Maryellen Schulze, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three siblings, Frances Houff, James Mayo, and Rita Holland. Relatives and friends may join the family for calling hours on Friday, September 9, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Road, Enfield, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave, Enfield, CT (please meet at church). Burial will follow in St Bernard Cemetery. A special thank you to John's caregiver and friend Danny for the wonderful care he gave John.
