Obituary for Martha J. Cooper

Martha Janet Cooper died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at her home in Wilbraham, MA. Martha is survived by her children, Theodore Geoffrey Sarant, (Ted), of Springfield, MA, Gale Marie Sarant (Richard), of Middletown, OH, Janet Diane Sarant and grandson Jake, of Wilbraham, MA, Douglas Brazil Sarant (Linda) and grandson Connor, of The Woodlands, TX. Her granddaughter Heidi Alexandra Rice (Gary) and her children, great grandchildren, Ella, Ryan, Zoe, and Sean, also of Middletown, OH, grandson, Ryan Michael Hamning, (Amanda), and great granddaughter Lily, of Cincinnati, OH, Richard Patrick Hamning, grandson, of Hilliard, OH. She is preceded in death by grandson John “Tyler” Rice, leaving great granddaughter, Makayla, of Hamilton, OH.
Martha was born on August 9, 1932 in Lock Haven, PA to Agnes and Darwin Cooper. Martha spent her childhood on the prosperous family farm in Mill Hall, PA. Martha graduated from Lock Haven High School in 1949. She attended Tufts University and Penn State University completing her undergraduate degree, later to receive a Master’s Degree in Education from Trinity College in Hartford, CT.
Martha was an active member in the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, The Pan Hellenic Organization, College Club, and Board member of the VNA.
Martha had a diverse career in advertising and marketing at Liturgical Publications and The Chamber of Commerce. She completed her teaching years with Springfield City Schools at the age of 78.
Throughout her life she greatly enjoyed teaching Sunday School, tennis, reading, entertaining, gardening, walking, board games, ping pong, badminton, world travel, and religiously visiting local libraries. Martha had a special gift of easily identifying gifts in others and encouraging these gifts. Her children and grandchildren are a testament to this. In lieu of flowers the family wishes to honor her through donations to Springfield Central Library, 220 State Street, Springfield, MA 01103. A service of celebration will take place on Saturday, July 29th at 2 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 6220 Nittany Valley Dr, Mill Hall, PA 17751.
