Obituary for Doris L. Stevensen (Stephan)

Doris Louise Stevensen passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018. Born January 25, 1922, in Sanborn, North Dakota, she was the youngest daughter of Albert Frederick Stephan and Emma Bommer, and the last of six siblings. Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Edward N. Stevensen, Jr. Doris is survived by her children, Edward N. Stevensen of Camano Island, WA, Susan J. Stevensen of Spruce Pine, NC, and Jeffrey A. Stevensen of Cape Elizabeth, ME; and grandchildren Ben Rachell, Jeffrey Rachell, Rocky Rachell, Reid Stevensen and Gina Stevensen.
Doris grew up in Sanborn, ND, a farming town that knew economic hardship during the Great Depression. Tall and athletic, she hand-delivered milk to her mother’s customers in town and played on the school basketball team. She was Valedictorian of her High School class. Doris was always spirited and independent, and worked her way through Secretarial School in Chicago when she was eighteen. She joined the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve after it was created in 1943 and served in various secretarial duties in Texas, New York and California. It was in California at the end of the war that she met and became engaged to her husband, Edward, a First Lieutenant Aviation Engineering Officer in the Marine Corp. They were married in 1946 and settled in Windsor Locks in 1950.
Doris had a long career as an executive secretary at Combustion Engineering. She was active in the Congregational Church of Windsor Locks until her death. Doris will be remembered for her beauty, her grace and her brightness of spirit. A service will be held for her at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 19th, at the Congregational Church of Windsor Locks, 8 Main Street, Windsor Locks. Burial services will be private.
