Robert M.  McLaughlin
Robert M. McLaughlin, 90, of Somers died Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Evergreen Health Care Center in Stafford after a brief illness. He was born April 28, 1927, in Boston, MA the son of the late Maurice J. "Mac" and Agnes (Furgang) McLaughlin. He grew up in the Pine Point neighborhood of Springfield, Massachusetts, attending the city's Technical High School. Upon graduating in June of 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving the last months of World War II. He attended Providence College and was a member of its storied Class of 1953 and earned a bachelor's degree in physics. He then earned a master's degree in education from American International College. He married the girl who grew up next door to him in Pine Point, Angie Colapinto, in 1954, and they lived first in East Hartford and then Enfield before moving to Somers in 1970. He went to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, where he became a design engineer for more than 30 years, working on the creation of a succession of jet engines before retiring in 1987. Bob was a skilled craftsman and avid hobbyist who despite bad eyesight built his own stereos and electronic organs, as well as rabbit hutches for his granddaughters, from scratch. He was a longtime faithful parishioner of St. Bernard Church in Enfield, and all of his children graduated from its parochial school. Besides, Angie, his wife of 63 years, he leaves a son, Joe McLaughlin of Somers and his fiancée, Cynthia Caliento, two daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Ralph Williams of Somers and Mary and Scott Bacon of Hampden, Massachusetts; granddaughters and husbands, Elizabeth and Matthew Kieras of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Anna Williams of Arlington, Virginia, Eve and Alex Hurley of Manchester, Connecticut, Ursula Williams and Gregory Kelly of State College, Pennsylvania, Ashley and Stephen Martins of Somers, Morgan Bacon of Hampden, and Rebekah and Jeremy Vick of Somers; and six great-grandsons, Jack and Will Kieras, Austin and Conor Hurley, Wesley Martins, and Benjamin Kelly. Robert was predeceased by a son, Thomas McLaughlin, and a great-grandson, Jude Robert Vick. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family during visiting hours on Monday, September 18, 2017, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. A funeral procession will form at 10:30 am at the funeral home for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 am at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave., Enfield. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery on State Street in Springfield, MA.
