Linda (Smith) Steiger, 74, of Enfield, beloved wife of 49 years to Gary Steiger, passed away peacefully on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, October 31, 2017 with her husband by her side. Linda was born on November 2, 1942 in Milo, ME and was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Velma (Burgess) Smith. Linda graduated from Gorham State College in 1965 with a B.S. Degree and a Masters in Education from Westfield State College in 1971. She taught 1st and 2nd grade in the Enfield School System for 35 years retiring in 2000. She was a member of both the Connecticut Educators Association and the National Educators Association respectively. Linda loved to travel in her retirement, taking several trips yearly. She loved spending winters at her home in Naples, FL. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Enfield Congregational Church where she was a member for over 50 years. Linda also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Linda was an avid gardener and could be found tending to her beautiful perennial garden. Linda was also an avid reader and loved to exercise. Besides her husband and best friend Gary, Linda is survived by her brother Richard Smith of Buxton, ME., her niece Samantha Court and her husband Jeffrey of Stow, MA., a nephew Aaron Smith and his wife Samantha and their son Carter Lloyd Smith of Buxton, ME. She is also survived by her sister in law Laurie Gardiner and her husband Robert of Enfield. Linda battled Melanoma cancer courageously for 3 years. Her family members would like to thank all of the doctors and nurses at UConn Medical Center and the Mass General Hospital for their wonderful care and compassion shown to Linda. Also, a special thanks to the Home and Community Health and Hospice Home Service members for their truly outstanding caring and compassion. A memorial service celebrating Linda’s life will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 11:00 am in the Enfield Congregational Church 1295 Enfield ST, Enfield, CT 06082. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Linda’s memory may be made to the Enfield Congregational Church.
