Obituary for Pauline S. Humphries

Pauline S. Humphries
Pauline Shirley (Evans) Humphries, 81, of Enfield, CT passed into eternal life on Monday, March 5, surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 30, 1936 to Evan Evans Sr. and Pauline (Rossi) in the Thompsonville section of Enfield, she lived there most of her life until moving to Agawam in 1981.
Pauline, known by those closest to her as Polly, spent her youth working at Rossi’s Farm and farm-stand on Enfield Street. Owned by her grandparents, this was where she learned her work ethic and developed her “green thumb.” She enjoyed working in the fields and loved getting her hands dirty in the soil.
Polly was a devoted wife and mother, as well as a career woman. She retired in 1998 from The US Postal Service, having achieved the rank of Postmaster. After more than 40 years of service, she finished her tenure in Riverton, CT where she made many friends in the small community, and was proud to represent the USPS. Pauline was also courageous enough to open her own business, purchasing the Puritan Bakery in Wethersfield, CT in 1983. She operated the business with the dedicated love, support and hard work of her family. She was a proud member of the small business community, glad to employ more than 20 local people and provide delicious breads and pastries to her customers. Through her hard work and determination, Pauline was always a great role model and inspiration to others, especially for women at a time when career opportunities were limited for them.
Polly loved to travel. She visited 34 of our United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, many of the Caribbean Islands, as well as the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain. In fact, she loved the Canary Islands so much that she purchased a timeshare there and went as often as she could. Polly was an avid fan of the “old classic” movies, she was a great bowler in her day, and she enjoyed reading and painting. Polly was always in the kitchen cooking for her family; they will never forget her famous meatballs and sauce. Although the recipes have been shared, it will be hard to recreate her magic.
Family meant the world to Polly. She loved to see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as often as possible. She took great joy in sharing in their daily lives as well as in celebrating their greatest achievements. Pauline leaves her devoted children James and his wife Ann of Longmeadow, Donna Rolfe and her husband Brian of Southwick, Owen James Jr. and his wife Gina of Longmeadow, and Evan and his wife Stacie of Agawam. Additionally, she leaves her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Jessica Fogelstrom and her husband Christopher, their children Rex, Wes and Lily; Jameson and Joel Humphries; Kevin Rolfe and his wife Julie, their children Hanna and Mason; Adam Rolfe and his wife Michelle; Steven and Matthew Dzikiewicz; Gabriella and Evelyn Humphries; and Nathaniel and Alexandra Humphries. She also leaves her devoted brother Evan Evans, Jr. and his wife Joan of Kingwood, TX and her beloved sister Virginia Typrowicz and her husband Francis of Agawam, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, Pauline was predeceased by her beloved husband, Owen James Humphries, Sr., her cherished daughter Traci Ann Dzikiewicz, and her precious granddaughter, Isabel Elizabeth Humphries.
A celebration of Pauline’s life will take place on Saturday, March 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. Visitation hours will be held Saturday morning from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at Enfield Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pauline’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
