Obituary for Helen Czechowicz (Pieslak)

Helen (Pieslak) "Babci” Czechowicz, 110, of Somers, wife of the late Joseph Czechowicz died peacefully on Friday, February 3rd, 2006. Helen was born in Wilno, Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania) on January 1st, 1896. She became a seamstress at an early age and studied to be a dental technician. Arriving at Ellis Island on October 8th, 1913, she settled in Winooski, Vermont with relatives. She met Joseph there and they were married in 1919, settling in Derby, Connecticut. They later moved to New Britain and raised two children. In the 60’s they moved to Somers. Helen always had a garden. Well into her 90’s she insisted on doing all the gardening work herself. She also enjoyed cooking and was very active throughout her life. She was dedicated to her family and an inspiration to all who knew her.
A loving grandmother, aunt and friend, Helen is survived by her grandsons, Gregory Woodruff and Charles Woodruff and his wife Mariane, great grandsons Daniel and Andrew Woodruff, all of Somers; many nieces and nephews, and good friends Kathi Collins and family, Ann Smith and family, and Robin Berriault and family. She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Erika Woodruff, son and daughter-in-law Arnold and Sylvia (Field) Czechowicz, and granddaughter Sylvia Czechowicz. Services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels has been entrusted with her arrangements.
