Obituary for Rudolf van den Berge

Rudolf van den Berge
Rudolf van den Berge, 86, died in his sleep on Sunday, April 30, 2017 in his home in Windsor Locks, Connecticut.

He is survived by his adored son, Richard and his wife, Heather; his treasured daughter, Lisa (Cucchiaro) and her husband, Joe; his cherished granddaughters, Molly van den Berge, Shannon Cucchiaro and Lexi Cucchiaro; his loving sister, Elly Vozzola; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy (Cichanowicz) van den Berge, in 1993; his dearest older brother, Dick van den Berge; and his caring parents.

Born in Indonesia and raised for much of his young life in New England, Rudolf spent time in the Navy in the submarine service until he was honorably discharged at the end of his military career. He then attended and graduated from Worchester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in electrical engineering before going on to be a life-long employee of Kodak until his retirement.

Rudolf married Dorothy Cichanowicz in 1963, and they spent the next 30 years living in the Rochester area and raising their two children, Rick and Lisa. Much of Rudolf’s time with his family was spent doing his favorite activity, sailing, particularly around Lake Ontario. After Dorothy passed away and his children got married, Rudolf moved to Connecticut to be near his extended family and began traveling the world on cruise ships, which turned out to be his new passion. His granddaughters became his greatest love and held a special place in his heart.

Visitation hours will be held Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring Street, Windsor Locks, followed by a service at 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will then travel to Pittsford, New York for a memorial service at the Creation Chapel at White Haven Memorial Park, 210 Marsh Road, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 with interment to follow.
