Obituary for Richard A. "Joe" August

Richard A. "Joe" August
Richard A. "Joe" August, 82, of the Hazardville section of Enfield, died Monday, January 8, 2018, at home in the arms of his wife. Joe along with his twin brother, Bob were born on Good Friday, April 19, 1935, in Springfield MA the sons of the late, Richard A. Sr., and Mary (Mlocek) August. The boys lived with their parents and paternal grandparents in Westfield, MA until 1941. Their Father had a home built for the family on Federal Hill in Agawam, MA where the boys grew up together and attended local schools. Joe was a graduate of Agawam High School where he played football for the Agawam Brownies. The team became champions after beating a Georgia team in the early 1950's. Joe was inducted to the Agawam Football Hall of Fame in October 2016. After high school, Joe attended Babson College in Wellesley Hills, MA. Joe's father suffered great damage to his store (Parkside Parts) in Westfield, MA from the Flood of 1955 and resulted in, Joe withdrawing from Babson after only two years to help his father and brother get back into the business. Shortly after, Joe enlisted in the Air National Guard and was stationed in Wyoming. In 1958, he met his wife, Barbara Eckstrom, on a blind date in New York City and they were married on December 19, 1959. They lived for 18 months in Needham, MA. Joe was employed as a traveling salesman and he and Barbara decided to move to Hazardville in May of 1961 with their first son, Gary. Joe worked for several automotive companies for several years, but by his 40th birthday, he was anxious to own his own company, which he started in 1975, selling 18 wheeler truck parts. He worked at this job until retirement at age 80. Jo was a proud member of the Cairo Shriners in Rutland Vermont and a member of the CT Free Masons A.F. & A.M. Joe's greatest joy was relaxing at his summer A frame in Cushing, ME. However, illness stopped that 2 years ago. In addition to his wife he is also survived by two sons, Gary (Laura) and Douglas (Barbara); four grandchildren, Dana, Barrett, Brent, and Claire; his twin brother, Robert (Marilyn) August; brother-in-law, William Eckstrom and sister-in-law, Sue Eckstrom and two nephews, Todd and Trent August. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family during visiting hours on Friday, January 12, 2018, from 4 pm to 7 pm at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. A funeral service celebrating Joe's life will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Scantic Cemetery in East Windsor.
