Obituary for George T. "Tim" Steele

Print
George Tim Steele, a resident of the Hazardville section of Enfield since 1980, passed away at Evergreen Healthcare on Tuesday, November 27th, 2018 with his daughter by his side after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Born March 5, 1948 in Yonkers, NY, he grew up in Hamden,CT. He was the son of the late George Donald Steele, (Navy veteran) and Martha Jane (Linn) Steele, (Marine veteran), who served during WWII.
As a child, Tim enjoyed trains and his parents amateur radio. He played baseball and wrestling, and raised horses, rabbits and ducks. He was a graduate of Lyman Hall High school and following was a Graduate of UCONN, Class of 1969, earning a Degree in agriculture.
George was a volunteer firefighter then a forest ranger in the late 60s and 70s. He then worked maintenance for the CT Department of Corrections for 20 years. After retiring, he did landscaping with his son and daughter, clearing lots and installing lawns in new developments with his Kubota. George loved to work and dabbled in agricultural and forestry work- including fighting California wildfires in the 70s, welding, woodworking, plants and gardening.
Known as "Tim" or "Timmy," his family, friends, and neighbors knew him as a genuine, mild mannered and kind man who enjoyed helping others. Social and friendly, Tim was a prankster with a lively sense of humor. He was known for his lobster cookouts and enjoyed having a nice cold beer with friends and neighbors at the end of the day. Tim was an avid UCONN basketball supporter. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping the most. His favorite local place was Sleeping Giant State Park, where he worked in his early years. His pride and joy was his property in Vermont, of which he built a cabin with his father, raised bass, and became host to family vacations filled with wiffle ball competitions, farming, fishing, hunting and hiking. Once joked on a landscaping job, "not having to rake rocks would be like heaven." Those who know Tim, know that screened topsoil, truly, would be his heaven. Tim is survived by his children whom he adored, George Ryan Steele and Trisha M. Steele,
one grandchild, Cameron George Steele, born October 30th of this year, whom he was fortunate to meet, just days before his passing. He was predeceased by a sister, Martha E. Hart.
