Obituary for Elias Zovas

Somers, CT - Elias Zovas, 94, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. Born in Myrtia Trichonida, Greece on May 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Spyridon and Despina (Giannakopoulos) Ziovas. As a young man he survived WWII including capture by the Germans. He then fought in the Greek Civil War, on behalf of the Greek government. Elias came to the United States from Greece in 1956 with his beloved wife of 55 years, Evelyn (Katsis).

After settling in Enfield, CT Elias worked as a chauffeur and caretaker for the late Mrs. Douglas Wallace of Longmeadow for 34 years. Elias was a talented cook and an exceptional gardener. He was a devoted member, first of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Enfield, and later until his death at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church in East Longmeadow, MA. He was the church chanter at St. Nicholas and then at St. Luke until this past summer, a skill that he perfected over 80 years since his childhood days in Greece. Elias will long be remembered for his unwavering love of family and of church.

He is survived his daughter Despina Pesculis of Millbury, MA; his son, Peter Zovas and wife, Anne, of Cheshire, CT; his brother, Constantine of Greece; his grandchildren: James Pesculis and wife Kim, Leah Pesculis, Justin, Gregory and Evan Zovas and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Colton. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Evelyn; son-in-law, John Pesculis; and his brother, Demetrios. The family would like to thank Dr. Jay Burton and Masonicare Hospice, especially nurse Eileen Markowski, for their gentle and loving care.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at St Luke Greek Orthodox Church, E. Longmeadow, MA. He will lie in state from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Thompsonville Cemetery in Enfield. Leete-Stevens Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
