Obituary for Charles "Chuck" F Masterson Jr.

Charles F. (Chuck) Masterson, Jr., of Somers, more recently of Manchester, CT, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 13, at Evergreen Healthcare Center in Stafford Springs. Chuck was born on March 20, 1932 in Buffalo, NY to the late Charles and Florence (Lesnau) Masterson. Chuck was the loving husband of the late Elaine (Guminski) Masterson and devoted father to Alisa (Don Filer) Masterson of New Haven, CT, Michael (Veronica) Masterson of Lahaina, HI, Stephen (Patty Egan) Masterson of Oak Bluffs, MA and Elizabeth (Gregg Beloff) Masterson of Southborough, MA. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Emma Filer (Munich, Germany), Kathryn Filer (Vernon, CT), and Nicholas and Caroline Beloff (Southborough, MA).
Chuck spent his childhood in Springfield, MA, and then attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. Upon graduating from Holy Cross, he joined the Navy and served as a communications officer aboard two aircraft carriers, the USS Wright and the USS Roosevelt, and was stationed off the coasts of Japan and Korea during the Korean War. After his discharge, he joined the Hamilton Standard division of United Technologies Corporation where he worked until his retirement in 1991. While at Hamilton Standard, he was active in the UTC ski club where he met a nurse, Elaine Guminski, who would become his beloved wife of 45 years before her passing in 2011. He also joined the 360 Federal Credit Union for UTC employees, ultimately becoming chairman of their board, a responsibility he very much enjoyed. During that time he also sat on the Board of Directors of the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs. In the early years of his retirement, he did consulting work for the Kollmorgen Company in Northampton, MA, working on their patent program.
Chuck created many special memories with his family, including years of skiing at the Springfield Ski Club and many carefree summers at the family’s cottage on Martha’s Vineyard. He and Elaine were very fortunate to be blessed with many great friends, and his family extends special thanks to Bob and Joan Levintan who were a great support to him throughout his life, and especially near the end.
Besides both his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Sr. Barbara Masterson, a Maryknoll nun. He also leaves behind his sisters Irene Stephens, Mary Grace Frederick and Genevieve (Daniel) McLaughlin and many nieces and nephews.
