Obituary for Margaret T "Betty" Smith (Thulen)

Margaret Thulen “Betty” Smith, 96, passed from this earthly world April 12, 2019. She was born Sept. 4, 1922 in Kingman, Maine, daughter of George and Lucy (Meaghear) Thulen. Growing up in the Poquonock section of Windsor, she met Charles A. Smith, Jr. (Alden) and they married in 1945 when he returned from WWII. Betty lived in Windsor Locks her whole adult life and worked in the Air Freight industry. A loving wife, mother and friend, she was active with the rosary devotion group at St Mary’s Church. She painted landscapes and made strings of rosary beads to give to loved ones. She made award winning hooked and braided rugs, and taught rug braiding at adult education and was active in the Woman’s Travel and Transportation Club of Hartford. She loved to travel; Ireland and Rome were her favorites. Gardening was her passion and she referred to herself as “Farmer Girl”.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Alden, brothers Philip and Charles Thulen and sisters, Katherine Thulen and Ruth Welch. She is survived by her son Robert Alden Smith and his wife, Lynn of NH, and her daughter, Marjorie Smith Goodstein and husband, Mark Goodstein of CT and FL; grandchildren, Jeremy Alden Smith and wife, Amy of OR, Robyn Lynn Smith of PA, Douglas Robert Goodstein and wife, Jennifer Miller of PA, Sarah Katherine Johnson and husband, Robert Johnson of Suffield, Daniel Lee Goodstein and wife, Meg of Windsor, and Aaron Patrick Goodstein of HI. Her great grandchildren are Kenneth Alden Smith of OR, Emery Alden and Charlotte Grace Goodstein of PA, and Brynn Katherine and Cora Elizabeth Johnson of Suffield.
On Monday, April 22, 2019, from 9:30 to 10:30 there will be a brief gathering at the Windsor Locks Funeral Home, 441 Spring St., Windsor Locks, CT 06096, prior to a Mass at 11:00 am at St. Mary Church, 42 Spring St., Windsor Locks, CT. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
