Obituary for Avonne A. Robbins (Steele)

Avonne A. Robbins, 89, of Suffield, formerly of Somers, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at the Suffield House. Born in Jud, North Dakota on September 2, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Vaughn and Alvina (Wilson) Steele and grew up in Amery, Wisconsin where she graduated from Amery High School in 1949. Avonne received her Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin -Superior and a Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut. After college, Avonne taught for several years in Madison, Wisconsin and Wiesbaden, Germany where she met her husband, Paul Robbins. After their wedding, she and Paul moved to Somers where she resided for over 40 years. Avonne continued her career, spending 30 years teaching at Center School in Ellington. She was a long-time member of the Somers Congregational church where she served as a deacon, participated on many committees and sang in the choir.
She was predeceased by her husband Paul in 2005. She is survived by her son, Vaughn W. Robbins and his wife, Jean of West Simsbury; two step-daughters, Hallie L. Lamphere and her husband Ernest, and Karin L. Robbins, both of Springfield, Vt.; and 4 grandchildren, Jeremy Robbins of Atlanta, GA, Lindsay (Robbins) Brazil of San Francisco, CA, Danielle Robbins of Carolina Beach, NC and Kyle Robbins of West Hartford.
Somers Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Services will be held privately with burial at the Somers Congregational Church Memorial Garden.
