Obituary for Donald P Hammond

Donald Paul Hammond, 95, of Enfield, died peacefully at his home of 66 years on January 30, 2021. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on February 11, 1925, to (the late) Paul and Ethel (Lyman) Hammond. He was predeceased by Jean, his beloved wife of 72 years, who was the love of his life. The love Donald and Jean shared was like no other. Their love for each other carried on through the way they cared for their family and friends.

Donald served in the Navy during WWII and went on to college to become an Engineer. He worked 35 years for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft and commuted daily from Enfield with his two best friends. He was a kind and gentle soul who would always greet you with a smile and handshake. He loved to play golf, fish, work in his yard, or have a beer with family or friends. He was full life and humor which he loved to share with others. I will remember him for his devotion to me, my brother and our extended family and friends. His keen intellect, compassion, generosity, sense of humor and humility extended to everything he did and everyone he encountered.

Donald is survived by his daughter Diane (Hammond) O’Brien and husband William of Mundelein, IL. his loving grandchildren, Daniel O’Brien, Charles O’Brien, and Molly (William) Galanis, and two great granddaughters, Grace and Lyla Galanis. He is also survived by his two sister-in-laws: Elizabeth Granfield and Florence Hammond. Besides his wife, Donald was predeceased by his only son, Gary Hammond, (survived by Nancy Gwiazda Hammond) and brother John Hammond. He always enjoyed the company of nephews John (Jay) Hammond, Paul Hammond and nieces Connie LeBlanc and Jean Mahoney; all of whom provided him with loving care and devotion. Donald also leaves many wonderful friends from his church family at the Enfield Congregational Church.

Donald’s family would like to thank all his doctors and nurses who provided exceptional care, especially his devoted and compassionate home caregiver: Boat (Sam), who unswervingly stayed by his side in his time of need. His next-door neighbors:the Smith’s, as well as Diane Kehoe and his long-time neighbors and many friends were always there to help with those things Donald used to love to do but was no longer capable of doing. The love and support Donald and our family received over the years was appreciated and will always be remembered. We will remember him for his love and devotion to his family and friends, and we will miss him immensely!

A memorial service for both Donald and Jean will take place September 13th, 11:00 am, at Enfield Congregational Church, Enfield, CT with burial immediately following at Enfield Street Cemetery.
