Obituary for Edith Rostek (Green)
Edith (Green) Rostek, 96, lifelong resident of Hazardville, entered into Eternal Peace on December 21, 2020 at Hartford Hospital after a three year residence at Meadowbrook in Granby.
She was born on August 25, 1924, in Hazardville, the loving daughter of the late Elston and Hazel Green.
Edith worked in the Springfield Armory during the Second World War. She was employed with Bigelow Carpets, as well as Easco Hand Tools in East Windsor. She was a faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church of Hazardville.
During her life Edith was a part of a local bowling league, where she proudly bowled several perfect games. During her younger years, she and “Tommy”, her husband enjoyed many nights at the Powder Mill Barn square dancing. Edith loved to play cards, and friends gathered at the Rostek’s house every Saturday night to play.
She was an avid outdoors-woman, who taught all of her grandchildren to fish and spent summer days tubing with them at Powder Hollow. She loved to metal detect in the hollow, and often took her grandchildren along to hunt for treasure. Edith walked everyday, usually with the family dog, to visit friends.
Edith was a character, people described her as a “force”. “Red Green”, as she was affectionately known to her friends, was always fiery. A vivacious woman, who didn't care to conform to the norms of her era. She wore jeans and flannel shirts when other women wore dresses and aprons.
Edith was outspoken, and she didn't care to sweeten her words for anyone else. She left no room for doubt where a person stood with her, and was fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She was funny and loved to laugh and joke. She was known to pull pantyhose over her face as a disguise and chase her grandchildren around for a great laugh. She loved her family and enjoyed having them around her for every occasion.
Edith is survived by her three children, Barbara Rostek of Willimantic, Jann Rankin and her husband Thomas, of East Hartland, and Paul Rostek and his wife Kimberley , of East Windsor; eight grandchildren, Jessica Porcello, Megan Cloutier, Deb Samek, Amy Gifford, Adam Schissel, Whitney Walton, Shaina Gambe, and Alyssa Rankin; and 22 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 69 years, Thomas “Tommy” Rostek, and by her sister Ruth (Green) Bridge.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a graveside service on Monday, December 28, 2020, at 12:30 at Saint Catherine’s Cemetery in Broad Brook.
