Edward Michael Burns (1962-2022), 59, died Friday, May 27, 2022 at St Francis Hospital. Born in Holyoke, MA on September 10, 1962 he was the son of the late John William and Katherine Burns. After graduating from South Hadley High School, Ed attended Holyoke Community College and went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Logistics Management from the University of Maryland and eventually entered the Air Force completing tours in Europe and Iraq before returning to civilian life. He trained as a commercial driver and drove cross country hauls from the northeast but eventually settled in Florida. During a scuba vacation to the Philippines, Ed met his wonderful wife – Joy Rivera Cabading. They were married in 1995. Ed decided that being away from home was not a preferred lifestyle so he began to explore other career opportunities eventually returning to his love of cooking. After graduation from culinary art school, he worked at Disney World in Orlando, FL. Ed and Joy decided to return to South Hadley, MA to be closer to family. Ed transitioned to the security sector and initially worked for private security firm protecting the Federal Building in Springfield, MA. He then was employed by the Connecticut Department of Corrections as a corrections officer. Joy subsequently joined him at the Connecticut Department of Corrections as a nurse. They then moved to Enfield, CT to be closer to work. After several years, the stress and rotation of shifts led to declining health and eventually a medical disability to allow him to concentrate on his health. Ed enjoyed cooking, video games, and family gatherings. Ed is survived by his wife, Joy; brother John Burns of Dover NH; brother Thomas W. Burns of Agawam; niece Kathryn Burns of Cape Cod; nephew John C Burns of Halifax NS; and many cousins throughout the USA.
