Obituary

Obituary for George J. MacDonald

George John MacDonald, 87, of Enfield, beloved and devoted husband of Mary (Sheehan) MacDonald, passed away at home on December 25th with his loved ones by his side. Born in Hartford, CT, on October 17, 1932 to John MacDonald and Anna Labansky. George grew up in Buckland, Manchester, attended Howell Cheney Technical High School and became a master electrician and worked for Sage-Allen and East Catholic High School until retiring in 1997.
He proudly served in the US Army infantry and awarded the Purple Heart for wounds during the Korean War. He was the commander of VFW Post 10219, and proud member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Military Order of the Purple Heart. George was a strong proponent of veterans services and member of the Veterans Council and was a key figure in the creation and research for the Enfield Connecticut World War II Honor Roll memorial, as well as a tireless volunteer for veteran’s parades and flag placement at veteran’s graves for Memorial Day. George retained his youthful spirit with his interest in old cars and his own 1966 Pontiac GTO. He had a playful nature, warm smile and always enjoyed time with his grandchildren.
George is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary and their four children; Michael and wife Lori of Winnsboro, TX, Tracey and husband Christopher Hassler, of Virginia Beach, VA, Maureen and husband William E. Moryto of Suffield, and Thomas and his wife Chasity of Granville, MA, his grandchildren: Andrew, Joseph, Brandon, Philip, Matthew, and Tia, and great grandchildren: Zoey, Alivia, Philip Jr. and Zayd, as well as his brother William MacDonald of Danbury, brother-in-law Ellsworth Cobb, sister-in-law Joan MacDonald, both of Enfield, and many beloved nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his brother Robert MacDonald, his sister-in-law Sheila (Sheehan) Cobb and his grandson William G. Moryto.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, December 30, 2019, from 4 to 6 pm at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd, Enfield. A brief memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at 11 am, at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, followed by a graveside service with military honors at the Hazardville Cemetery on Elm Street in Enfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in George’s memory to the Disabled American Veteran’s at https://www.dav.org. To leave online condolences, please visit www.Leetestevens.com.
