Obituary for Giovanna M. Fontana (Castelli)

Giovanna M. Fontana, 88, of Enfield, entered into Eternal Peace on Friday, January 8, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital. She was born on October 19, 1932, in Naro, Agrigento, Sicily, the loving daughter to the late Giuseppe and Maria (Torreta) Castelli. Giovanna met her husband, the late Alfonso Fontana, while in Sicily and she moved with him to Enfield where they made their home and raised their family. Giovanna was an extremely talented seamstress. She learned to sew at the age of 13 from her aunt who had taught sewing classes in Italy. By the young age of 17 she was hand making beautiful dresses for herself and her sisters, later she used these talents to make her daughter her own dresses to cherish. Everyone who knew Giovanna knew that she was the one to call if they were in need of alterations. She had such skill that she even assisted her husband with his shoe repair shop doing repair work to leather. She was a faithful parishioner of St. Patrick Church in Enfield. She loved traveling, especially to Italy. Her greatest joy in life was the time spent with her grandchildren. She cherished the moments they spent together and cared so much for them, always calling to check in. Giovanna is survived by her two children, Massimo Fontana of Enfield, and Lorena Turner and her husband, Robert, of Enfield; and her two grandchildren, Erika and Alexander Turner. In addition to her husband, Alfonso Fontana, she was predeceased by her siblings, Carmela Alaimo, Giovanni Castelli, and Ornella Russo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 10:00 am at St. Patrick Church, 64 Pearl St., Enfield, CT 06082. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's King Street Cemetery. The use of masks and social distancing will be required at both the church and the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Giovanna's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N.
