Obituary for Joan Irene Belsen (Moore)

On April 9th, 2021, Joan Belsen, loving wife, and mother of three children, passed away at the age of 89. Joan was born March 31st, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY to Irene and Harold Moore. On September 25, 1955 she married Charles Frank (Charlie) Belsen. They raised three children on Long Island and later moved to Connecticut.

Joan was proud to be a legal secretary. She mastered her secretarial skills in high school and worked as a legal secretary until her retirement at the age of 76. Joan was always incredibly involved in legal secretarial professional associations. In the 1960’s she was instrumental in establishing the first Suffolk County, NY, chapter of the National Association of Legal Secretaries. She remained active in the county, state, and national associations through her life, attending meetings and conventions all over New York State and then the country. Joan enjoyed the travel but, most of all, loved her friendships with people from all over the country, which she maintained until the end.

Joan and Charlie loved Las Vegas and traveled there almost yearly until his passing in 2002. They went with relatives, friends, and alone. They competed in slot tournaments and were surprising lucky! Joan celebrated her 85 th birthday in Las Vegas with family and, of course, won a jackpot on a poker machine on her birthday! She also frequented Atlantic City, Mohegan Sun, and Foxwoods, but her favorite was always Vegas.

Joan is survived by her three loving children, Cheryl Cantos, James Belsen married to Hazel, and John Belsen. She has eight grandchildren, Stacey Dressler, Jason Dressler, and Nicholas Cantos, Rachel Medeiros and Andrew Belsen, and Stephanie, John, and Daniel Belsen; and one great-granddaughter, Kyla Lynn Lloyd, who she adored. Joan also leaves a niece, nephews, and many cherished friends.
