Obituary for Scott P. Bacon

Scott P. Bacon, 67, of Wakefield, RI, formerly of Hampden, MA, passed away on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at South County Hospital, Wakefield, RI.

Born in Akron, OH on November 5, 1953, he was the son of the late Richard and Joyce (Palmer) Bacon and lived in Ohio until he moved and spent most of his childhood in Longmeadow, MA. Scott graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. In 1993 he obtained his Masters of Education Degree from Westfield State University. He enjoyed a long teaching career for Enfield Public Schools. Scott was married to Mary (McLaughlin) Bacon for 33 years before Mary’s passing in 2019. Besides his parents and beloved wife, he was predeceased by his sister, Laura Bacon. He leaves to cherish his memory, his two loving daughters, Ashley Martins and her husband Stephen of Somers, and Morgana Bacon of South Windsor. His pride and joy were his grandsons, Wesley Scott and Cameron Nathan.

Most commonly garbed in his beloved Cleveland Browns infamous hue of orange, even strangers were unable to deny that this man was a force to be reckoned with. Eleven years post retirement, former students still remember “Mr. Bacon.” His classroom was full of humor and music, as he would insist upon playing his acoustic guitar while teaching the multiplication tables. He would show off his singing voice by creating a song about coordinating conjunctions, and you didn’t dare besmirch Tom Petty as a 6th grader in his presence. His daughters still remember the spectacular amount of pig paraphernalia, a homage to his last name that had been gifted to him by countless students throughout the years (and condemned by their mother to never bring home). After his passing it was discovered that Scott kept anecdotal records of every student he ever taught, so rest assured you were just as memorable to him as he was to you.

Scott Bacon was President of the Southern New England Browns Backers Club for 18 years. Given the team’s less-than impressive list of wins, his family views this as an example of his unwavering loyalty. For years he battled COPD, an illness most would find crippling, but was able to live at home with no medical assistance. When his wife was diagnosed with an incurable illness, Scott put his own health aside to take care of her. He was unapologetically obstinate, even when it came to the beard he refused to shave for over 30 years.

Muck Fichigan.
