Obituary for Shirley Knox (Wiesing)

Shirley (Wiesing) Schumaker Knox, 97, of Enfield died on Sunday, March 6, 2022 at JGS Lifecare in Longmeadow. She was born on May 4, 1924 in Holyoke, MA, daughter of J. Everett and Gertrude Wiesing. She was an Enfield resident for 56 years and an Elementary School teacher in Enfield for 23 years. She graduated from UMASS Amherst with a BS Degree and went on to obtain a Master's Degree from Central CT State University in New Britain. After retirement, she worked part-time for the Fuller Brush Co. and Southern Auto Auction, and was co-owner of the Campsite camping supply store. She volunteered at Parkway Pavilion for many years and was active at the Enfield Senior Center. She was predeceased by her parents, her only sister, Elinor Dziobek, and husbands Horace "Mike" Schumaker and William Knox. She is survived by 2 daughters, Gloria Smith and her husband Dennis of Granby, MA and Carol Thompson and her partner Ed Pastula of Vernon, CT, and 5 grandchildren, Jason Smith and his wife Jamie of Crestview, Florida, Nicholas Smith and his wife Aldina of Granby, MA, Jennifer Smith of Granby, MA, Trevor Thompson and his wife Amanda of Monson, MA, Kyle Thompson of Nanjing, China; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was a devoted and active member of the Enfield American Baptist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed camping for many years, belonging to 3 clubs. In her later years, she was smitten by card playing and making greeting cards and the company of Donald Remy. The family wishes to thank the staff at East Village Place and JGS LifeCare for their loving care and kindness while mom was in their care. Her family will receive friends on Thursday, March 24 from 10:00 to 11:30 AM at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd. Enfield with a service to follow at the funeral home.
