Obituary for Susan A Boucher (Herter)

Susan A. Boucher, 63, of Suffield, passed away Saturday March 5, 2022 at home after a long and brave battle with cancer. Born in Flushing, NY, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Kathleen (O'Keefe) Herter.  She was raised in Enfield graduating from Enfield High School in 1976.  Sue received a B.S. in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching from CCSU in 1980, a M.S. in General Science Education from CCSU in 1986, and a M.S. in Special Education & Teaching from the Univ. of St. Joseph in 1995.  She lived in Suffield since 1999 and was a parishioner at Holy Family Church of St. Jeanne Jugan Parish. Teaching was her true passion. Sue taught in Portland and Bristol prior to becoming an Earth Science teacher at Enfield High School beginning in 1997.  She became the Department Chair of the Science Department and ran the school Science Club before retiring in 2017.  Sue was inducted into the Who’s Who of American Teachers in 2001.  She earned the coveted Enfield Teacher of the Year award during the 2002-2003 school year and was awarded the CT Science Teacher of the Year in 2003-2004. 

Athletically gifted, she earned varsity letters in field hockey, basketball, and softball at Enfield High and captained all three teams her senior year. She was named D-2 All New England first teams in both softball and field hockey at CCSU. She earned a try-out for the 1980 Olympic Field Hockey team.  Sue enjoyed coaching high school softball, field hockey, volleyball, and tennis.  She was an avid bowler and was a member of the Enfield High School teacher's bowling League.  Sue was inducted into the Enfield Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.  In her free time, she was inspired to write, and was successful in publishing a book, Beluga Suite, along with various journal articles. 

Susan is survived by a daughter, Anna Boucher of Suffield, a sister, Theresa Forde and her husband Richard of South Carolina, two brothers, Lawrence Herter and his wife Ellen of Ellington, Joseph Herter and his wife Kimberly of Ashland, MA. and several nieces and nephews. Visitation hours will be held from 3-6 p.m. Thursday March 10, 2022 at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, March 11, at Holy Family Church, 23 Simon Rd. Enfield (Please meet at Church). Committal will follow at Enfield St. Cemetery.
