He Believed In Me

There was never a moment during my high school athletic career that Mr. Croft didn’t believe in me. But the story that will stick with me forever took place during my junior year. We had been working for a few years (yes years) to get me to 3-step in the 100m hurdles. I was more comfortable 4-stepping, but Mr. Croft knew I could shave at least 3 seconds off my time if I 3-stepped. I had no confidence in myself, I thought I would fall flat on my face…I was ready to give up. We had a track meet in Ellington (his hometown). On the bus ride to the meet he flashed that unforgettable smile and said, “Alright, this is my hometown…make me look good”….and we did. Not only did we win the meet, but I 3-stepped the hurdles!!! I remember seeing Mr. Croft out of the corner of my eye jumping up and down as I took 3 effortless strides between the hurdles. His face was beaming when I crossed the finish line, he hugged me so tight it brought tears to my eyes…he was proud of me and that felt great. I did it, and he knew I could do it! Thanks for the memories Mr. Croft. You will be greatly missed.
