We did not know Lisa but I can imagine who she was and the lovely, warm person that she must have been from the condolences that we have read about her and from hearing about her from George and Dom. Condolence: Lisa and I were regular climbing partners for quite a while. There was a time when it seemed as if just about every weekend we headed to the Gunks. One year we climbed at the Gunks at least one day every month for an entire year. There were a lot of cold days on the rock!

But she was always eager to get out. Like a lot of people I know, Lisa seemed to feel most alive when she was climbing.

All of those hours and days together. We shared a lot. What I remember her talking about the most was her family. Hilarious stories about her 90-plus-year-old grandmothers. And stories and updates about her young niece. She was so proud of that girl. She talked about her parents and brothers, and sister. Her family, it was obvious to me, was the center of her life.

And Lisa was practically a big sister to my own son when he joined us on climbing trips. She was always kind and patient and generous with him, and he felt very comfortable with her. The three of us climbed Sliding Board together on Whitehorse Slab, New Hampshire when my boy was about 12. What a wonderful day! I'm looking at a picture now of the three of us smiling, arms interlocked, on top of the cliff.

Lisa and I also shared a scary experience as day turned to night, rappelling off a 1,000-foot tower in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada. Long story short: the ropes kept snagging; the wind was whipping; teeth were chattering; the route was who-knows-where; we were building sketchy anchors on the vertical wall; we repeatedly rappelled into the dark void until we finally touched ground around midnight -- about 16 hours after starting up. During the entire stressful ordeal Lisa remained calm, steady, upbeat.

Kind of like the last time I saw her. It was at Hartford Hospital. She had just endured some sort of treatment and she was about to go home for a while before beginning a new procedure in Boston.

No problem. Situation under control. Don't worry. That's what her mood communicated.

That was the Lisa I knew.
