Wrapping Wars

Well, I was young, but I recall the hubbub on my end of things. For days before Christmas, my Mom and Dad would brainstorm about how to wrap Roger and Lorraine’s gift because the job was always done spectacularly by both sides. I think it probably started out simple enough, but it escalated from year to year. I distinctly recall one year where one of the parties made a pyramid wrapped in green paper and the entire thing was festooned with pine or fir branches fully decorated !! It was fun to see Mom get involved in it all because she was usually the quiet one who watched my Dad from the side lines and lent a hand where she could. I know there was always a rush to get this part of it or that part of it done last thing because “Roger and Lorraine will be here any minute.” I so looked forward to even the briefest visit from them. Your Mother has always had the wonderful ability to bring sunshine right into any room she enters, and to make you think she has been waiting all week just for this little glimpse of you yourself. Along the same lines, I have to tell you both my Dad and Mom at various times pointed out to me on Christmas morning that I should look at the way the package from my Aunt & Uncle was wrapped because “Uncle Roger always turns the ends over twice so there is a nice clean edge to the paper and a neat look to the package.” We, of course, were always told that was the “proper” way to wrap a package. I am sure your Mom recalls the Wrap Wars better than I. If so, let me know what she says as I would like to add it to my family lore as well.  Love, cousin Sharon
